With an intro reminiscent of U2 entering a saloon in the wild west the opening track on The People’s self entitled début EP lulls you in to a false sense of security (even though it is called ‘Intro’) because just as you settle in to your seat to soak in the first track it ends as dramatically as it starts and the second track, ‘Sweet Nothing’ races away……….
A simple pop/rock track bounces along nicely inspired by the classic driving beat and bass. This track will be remembered mostly for its Green Day-esque harmonies as it does have some of those early 90’s qualities but what really struck me that the 80’s post pop/rock feel wasn’t lost on me and Id go out on a limb to say this wouldn’t look out of place on the Breakfast Club soundtrack. And I don’t give those comments away for free!!!
LTG and Lose your head are products of the 9o’s for me and probably the weaker of the bunch if I’m being honest, albeit these are still catchy tunes. Don’t get me wrong they are well thought through and build nicely and the pay off in the chorus in Lose you head works but for me the style of these particular tracks are a little too much like recent past rather than retro. In a live situation these guys will be strong favourites I’m sure, but for me there is a sense that the song writing is considerably influenced by the Arctic Monkeys in so much of a slight regional dialect and that’s just too recent to get away with for my liking.
That said however, the piste de resistance is yet to come…………and Shock is my clear favourite. The highlight of the EP, this brilliantly put together pop tune would do well in any chart and I wouldn’t be surprised if this is an important track for these young men. Instantly takes me on a trip of nostalgia soaking in everything that was good about the post punk era where 80’s bands fought for the right to be arty and different, you hear the faint paint chips of Duran Duran, a bass line that ‘white lines’ could have been inspired by and the production itself was reminiscent of early U2 and the Cure. A real retro feel with a more modern approach to the vocal delivery. Indie bands today are in danger of just being copy cats to the 90’s phenomenon of Brit Pop that still has its vapour trails in the rock venues around the UK today…….nothing wrong with wanting to be part of an era that shaped a nation for ten years it was a great time to be alive certainly in music but we have to move on and The People certainly have the potential for making new and exciting music.
What like about these guys is that they have widened their influences……the 80’s was ridiculed for it’s mock punk pop clothes, new romantic drivel, and cheesy lines but created some of the best known names in music and even influenced a genre or two on the way. Disco became pop and pop became dance……….Sting, Paul Weller and Robert Smith and co were always bubbling underneath the polished glamour and inspire many bands today and the people have managed to capture the essence of this in what they do.
